Supreme Court of India approves Indian Railways for implementing ‘Kavach’. HDM and HUN North East Frontier Railway routes are marked for ‘Kobach’. The Hon’ble Supreme Court of India on April 15, 2024 appreciated the steps taken by the Indian Railways to implement the indigenous automated train protection system ‘KABACH’ in trains. The Hon’ble Supreme Court noted that the Union of India has taken several steps to improve anti-collision systems in Indian Railways trains such as installing safety systems, improving track quality, training and sensitizing employees, revising maintenance procedures and operating the Kobach system.

Kobach is an automatic train protection system indigenously developed by the Research Design and Standards Organization (RDSO) in collaboration with Indian industry. It is a first-class electronic system of Level-4 Security Integrity standard. Armor here means preventing the crossing of the danger signal (red) and providing protection by avoiding head-on collisions. If the driver fails to control the train according to the speed limit, the train’s braking system is automatically activated. In addition, the active shield system can also prevent head-on collisions between two locomotives. ‘Kobach’ is one of the cheapest proven Safety Integrity Level 4 (SIL-4) technologies with a failure rate of 1 in 10,000 years. It will also pave the way for railways to export indigenous technology.
