Kerala Governor Arif Muhammad Khan has given assent to five long-pending bills passed in the state assembly. The Bills include the Land Allotment Amendment Bill, Kerala Co-operative Societies (Amendment), Paddy Wetland Amendment Bill, Dairy Cooperation Bill and the Excise Act Amendment Bill.

The consent was given a few days ago – the governor

The governor said that his consent was given a few days ago. Its details were released today in the vote for the general elections that ended in Kerala on April 26. According to him, many petitions were received for and against the bills. Therefore, these were sent to the government for discussion. After that, it took some time to evaluate it and only then was an agreement reached. On the other hand, the Congress looked into it and said that when the Left government is in trouble, the Governor comes to the rescue.

LDF went on strike in protest against the governor

The ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) had earlier observed a strike in Idukki district on January 9 to protest against the governor. Khan was alleged to have refused to give his assent to the Kerala Government’s Land Allotment (Amendment) Bill, 2023. During this period, LDF also marched up to Raj Bhavan.

Considering the decades-old demand of the people of Idukki district, the Kerala government passed the bill in the Kerala Assembly on 14 September 2023. The Left government then approached the Supreme Court alleging inordinate delay by the governor in approving the bills.
