Voting for the first phase of Lok Sabha Elections 2024 is over. However, in light of the elections, the politics over Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) continues. On reports of malfunctions detected in EVMs during mock polls in some places, the Chief Electoral Officer of Kerala said that EVMs are a tested machine and whatever happened was a procedural error. Let us tell you, during the mock poll conducted in Kasaragod, Kerala, a discrepancy was found in the number of votes cast in EVMs and VVPAT. Investigation found one more vote in favor of BJP.
EVM is a tested machine
A mock poll was held in Krasgood, Kerala on Wednesday. Kerala Chief Electoral Officer Sanjay Kaul said EVM is a tested machine. Many petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court raising questions about the reliability of EVMs. As far as the security of EVM machines is concerned, a decision has been taken to this effect. This is a machine that is not connected anywhere else. What happened in Kasaragod is fundamentally a procedural error.
That’s how the mistake happened
He further said that when we prepare these voting machines for the elections, when the machines are turned on, we put the names of the candidates and conduct mock polls. He said that whatever happened at Kersgood was being investigated by Bharat Electronics Limited, which owns these machines. They wanted to complete this process as soon as possible. When he checked the first test button, the name of the first candidate appeared. At that he turned off the machines thinking that everything was fine. The names of the candidates in the voting machine are alphabetical. There was a certain political party, which is symbolized by the lotus, it was the first candidate. When he installed this machine in a different location, the same print appeared as before.
