Voting for the first phase of Lok Sabha Elections 2024 is over. However, in light of the elections, the politics over Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) continues. On reports of malfunctions detected in EVMs during mock polls in some places, the Chief Electoral Officer of Kerala said that EVMs are a tested machine and whatever happened was a procedural error. Let us tell you, during the mock poll conducted in Kasaragod, Kerala, a discrepancy was found in the number of votes cast in EVMs and VVPAT. Investigation found one more vote in favor of BJP.

EVM is a tested machine

A mock poll was held in Krasgood, Kerala on Wednesday. Kerala Chief Electoral Officer Sanjay Kaul said EVM is a tested machine. Many petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court raising questions about the reliability of EVMs. As far as the security of EVM machines is concerned, a decision has been taken to this effect. This is a machine that is not connected anywhere else. What happened in Kasaragod is fundamentally a procedural error.

That’s how the mistake happened

He further said that when we prepare these voting machines for the elections, when the machines are turned on, we put the names of the candidates and conduct mock polls. He said that whatever happened at Kersgood was being investigated by Bharat Electronics Limited, which owns these machines. They wanted to complete this process as soon as possible. When he checked the first test button, the name of the first candidate appeared. At that he turned off the machines thinking that everything was fine. The names of the candidates in the voting machine are alphabetical. There was a certain political party, which is symbolized by the lotus, it was the first candidate. When he installed this machine in a different location, the same print appeared as before.

Spread fake news instead of knowing what the truth is

Sanjay Kaul also pointed out that this issue was raised to create confusion before voting instead of understanding what actually happened. He said that fake news was being spread. Everyone must ensure that the voting machines are secure. Nothing is going to happen. Every button you press, it will only be registered in the machines.

This news is false

Earlier on April 18, the Election Commission of India refuted allegations in the Supreme Court that during the mock poll held in Kasaragod, Kerala, discrepancies were found in the number of votes cast in EVMs and VVPAT tokens. In the investigation, one unusual voice was found. The Supreme Court heard petitions filed for full verification of votes cast using EVMs through Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT). VVPAP, an independent vote verification system that allows the voter to see if his vote was received correctly.

Senior Deputy Election Commissioner Nitish Kumar Vyas told a bench of Justice Sanjeev Khanna and Justice Dipankar Dutta, “These reports are false. We have received the allegations which have been investigated by the District Commissioner and it has been found that these are false allegations. We will submit a detailed report to the court.
