Biswajit Sarkar, Hemtabad: Jalipara from Raiganj’s Bindol was once in the headlines. Lack in the family. So many of the family sold their kidneys for 50 thousand to 1 lakh rupees. As soon as the matter came to light, riots broke out across the state. Ministers and bureaucrats have visited the village. Had many promises. But even after 11 years, the village’s situation has not changed. It is alleged that many people secretly steal and sell kidneys.

As soon as the Lok Sabha polls came, the leaders of the political parties started gathering in this village again. Parties have resorted to election campaigning by blaming each other for the underdevelopment of villages. Not finding work in the area, most of the youth of Jalipara went to work as laborers in foreign states. Some of the local people say, ‘The shortage has been so severe during the last three decades that many have been forced to sell their kidneys to save their existence. Many have died prematurely while working alone.’

In the words of Bablu Jali from Jalipara, ‘I was forced to sell my kidney for my daughter’s wedding.’ Chiaru Jali said, ‘I was in dire straits with my wife and four children. That’s why I’m selling a kidney and putting a grocery store in front of the house.’

Residents of the area, Bhavesh Jali, Suresh Jali complained that ministers every year before the elections drive into the village in expensive cars and make many promises. But not even a little of 100 days of work was fulfilled. Three years ago, the head of the concerned village panchayat in Trinamool, Laila Khatun, was jailed for generating several crores of rupees in a 100-day project. Work on this project has been stopped for a long time. As a result, residents are in a dire situation.

Gram Panchayat Congress chief Jinnatun Khatun said, ‘Panchayat elections were held last year. Just got the job. All the arrangements will be made so that the residents of the village can carry out the work of various projects.

Haren Barman, the local BJP leader, said, ‘There has been no development in this village because of the failure of Trinamool. There have been several corruptions in Gram Panchayats. One and a half crore taka has been stolen in 100 days of work.’

Opposition Gram panchayat leader Shahid Ali said, ‘Trinamool government has worked on several projects for Jalipara village. There are plans to make this village a model village in the future.’
