Heavy rain, thunderstorms hit UAE Achi-News

Authorities in the United Arab Emirates issued a red alert across the Gulf nation advising citizens to remain vigilant as the weather continued to worsen on Tuesday, forcing the government to close schools and send its employees to work remotely.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms were seen across the UAE with powerful lightning in the sky, starting from late Monday until Tuesday, local media reported.

The National Meteorological Center was quoted by Khaleej Times saying: “Unstable weather conditions will continue to affect the UAE from Monday to Wednesday due to an extension of surface low pressure and two waves of unsettled weather to move across the country on Tuesday.”

Amidst the lights and heavy rain, some areas reported power cuts, according to The National news a report.

The government also announced on Wednesday distance learning for private schools in Dubai due to storms.

“The Government of Dubai has extended remote working for employees of all its entities until Wednesday, April 17, due to the weather. Private schools in Dubai have also been directed to continue remote learning tomorrow,” the statement on X noted. March.

“Private sector entities are encouraged to adopt remote working tomorrow and take all necessary steps to ensure everyone’s safety,” said the Dubai Media Office.

Authorities have closed roads across the country as a precaution and have begun an emergency response to the worsening weather.

More rain and light is expected as the clouds form over coastal areas especially the northern and eastern parts of the Middle Eastern country.

The bad weather also forced Dubai International Airport to shut down operations for 25 minutes on Tuesday.

A statement posted on X, before Twitter, said there was “major flooding on the roads leading to the airport and forecasts indicate that the unsettled weather will continue until tomorrow morning”.

The airport advised travelers to check their flight status, allow significant extra travel time, and use the Dubai Metro for smoother transportation.

“In light of the weather at the time and keeping in mind the safety of students and staff, private schools, nurseries and universities in Dubai must continue to offer distance learning on Wednesday, April 17,” the Dubai Information and Human Development Authority added on X.

The heavy rain comes days after Oman was swept by flash floods, killing nearly a dozen children.
