An encounter broke out between the village volunteers of two communities in Manipur’s Imphal West district on Monday evening. The police gave this information.

A police officer said that there was no news of casualties in these incidents. But both sides used sophisticated weapons in the encounter.

According to him, a group of village volunteers came down to the area from the hills of Kangpokpi district and started shooting indiscriminately at the positions of the rival groups. Heavy shelling was then reported in Aung Sakmai and villages near Wangsangol.

The policeman said that the frightened villagers moved to safe places and took shelter in community buildings. He said sporadic firing continued until the news arrived. Additional security forces are sent to the area to control the situation.

Ethnic violence began in May last year between the Mitais, who live in the country’s Imphal Valley, and the Kuki community, who live in the surrounding hill areas. Since then, more than 200 people have been killed and thousands have been left homeless.
