The Election Commission of India (ECI) is expected to operate in a manner that gives a level playing field to all parties, but with the time frame in which the Lok Sabha elections are being held this year, its conduct is questionable. Elections to the 17th Lok Sabha were held in seven phases in 2019. The elections began on 11 April and continued until 19 May. The count was made on May 23. In 2014, the elections were held in 9 stages from April 7 to May 12. The results were announced on May 16.

Come 2024 and Lok Sabha elections will be held in seven phases from April 19 to June 1 and counting will be done on June 4. However, this time the elections could be completed in a shorter time with developed infrastructure and artificial intelligence; ECI could do better in saving people time.

No wonder then a survey found that voter trust in the Election Commission has decreased compared to five years ago. In 2019, more than half of voters said they had a large amount of trust in the EC. It’s down to just over a quarter this time. When talking about violation of model code of conduct, the election department seems to act only after people complain. Given the resources at its command, why can’t the EC act after receiving recognition? Indeed, performance remains questionable.
