GUWAHATI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has informed a Delhi court that Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, who claims to be a diabetic, consumed mangoes, sweets and tea with sugar while in jail. Zohab Hussain, the ED’s special counsel, argued that Kejriwal’s consumption of sugary foods contradicted his claim of high sugar levels and appeared to be a ploy to secure bail in the money laundering case against him.

During the hearing before Special Judge Kaveri Bovaja, Hussain argued that Kejriwal’s request to consult his regular doctor via virtual conference, citing fluctuating blood sugar levels, was questionable given his dietary choices in prison. Kejriwal’s application seeking permission to consult his regular doctor was later withdrawn, with advocate Vivek Jain representing Kejriwal informing the court that a better application would be filed.

However, Hussain raised concerns about the language used in Kejriwal’s application, particularly the phrase "An alarming rise in diabetes levels." The ED sought clarification from the jail authorities about Kejriwal’s diet and medication, pointing out that despite the claim of high diabetes, he consumed foods known to raise blood sugar levels.

Advocate Jain objected to Hussain’s submissions, accusing him of playing to the media gallery. Despite withdrawing Kejriwal’s plea, the court ordered Tihar Jail authorities to submit a medical report on Kejriwal, including details of his diet. The matter was adjourned for further discussion on April 19 at 2:00 p.m.

Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by ED on March 21 in connection with a money laundering case, with his judicial remand scheduled to end on April 23. Kejriwal appealed this decision in the Supreme Court, which issued a notice on his plea but declined to do so. to grant temporary relief.

The ED accused Kejriwal of being "kingpin" of the Excise Scam in Delhi, alleging his direct involvement in the misappropriation of funds amounting to over Rs. 100 crores. The agency alleges that Kejriwal orchestrated a conspiracy to give extraordinary profit margins to certain private companies involved in the excise business.

Additionally, ED alleges that Vijay Nair, acting on behalf of Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia, coordinated the conspiracy. While Sisodia remained in jail, Sanjay Singh was recently granted bail by the Supreme Court.
