A Maharashtra Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) workers’ union leader on Thursday claimed that the plan to purchase 2,200 buses has been stalled due to the delay in signing the related file by Chief Minister Ekanath Shinde. According to him, out of 15,600 state government buses, 10,000 buses are in a deplorable condition.

Shrirang Barge of Scheduled Tribe Employees Union addressed a press conference at Tilak Bhavan of the Congress. Meanwhile, he said, 10,000 buses out of 15,600 in the MSRTC fleet are in poor condition. The delay in signing the files led to a shortage of vehicles in the summer. Barga said, many buses from the fleet have covered a distance of more than 8.5 lakh kilometers. These buses suffer from frequent breakdowns, causing inconvenience to passengers and staff. Additionally, such buses have led to a 1.5 percent increase in MSRTC’s operating costs.

According to him, the prime minister did not sign the file related to the fund, and hence the purchase of 2,200 buses was stopped. Why was the case not signed? It was sent to the Chief Minister’s office much before the implementation of the code of conduct for Lok Sabha elections. Barga said the Prime Minister, as MSRTC chairman, should explain the delay as it takes at least three months for the new buses to arrive after the order is placed.
