PATNA: 19 year old boy dalit A young man was shot dead and another suffered fatal injuries following a violent incident collision between two groups of people on installing a statue of Bhimrao Ambedkar in Maqsoodpur village under Patlapur Panchayat in Patna Wednesday late night. Three men were arrested on Thursday for indiscriminate firing, resulting in the death of Vikram Kumar, Patna (West) SP Abhinav Dhiman said.
The village has been tense since April 14 when one of the groups proposed to install a Ambedkar statue on a piece of government land near a school after celebrating his birthday. Members of another group opposed the move, Shahpur police station SHO Manish Kumar said.
After a three-day lull, the situation turned hostile when the rival group learned that the foundation for the statue had been built. Police arrived at the village around 7:30 pm on Wednesday and calmed down both groups.
However, violence erupted around 10:00 p.m., when both groups engaged in arson and attacked each other with stones.
Indiscriminate firing followed and a bullet hit Vikram’s face. Udai Kumar (24) suffered a head injury from a stone.
The city SP said that the police found two bullet shells from the scene. “The village houses 100 families from one group and 22 from another group,” he said, while revealing that police guards were stationed in the area.
Diman said the police confirmed both of them at Danapur sub-hospital where Vikram was declared brought dead by the doctors while Udai was referred to Patna Medical College Hospital. Vikram’s body was handed over to the family after a post-mortem.
