Panaji: Viriato Fernandes, who is contesting the 2024 Lok Sabha Election from South Goa constituency in favor of the Congress, has made a controversial statement. He expressed the opinion that the constitution was imposed on Goa after being freed from Portuguese administration.
Fernandes, who is a retired Navy veteran and was part of the Kargil war, is contesting in the Goa South Lok Sabha constituency. Speaking at a campaign meeting in this backdrop, Fernandes said that when Goa was liberated in 1961, the Constitution of India was imposed on us. In response to this, Goa CM Pramod Sawant said that such statements are terrible and dangerous for Congress democracy.
Fernandes supported the fight to give dual citizenship to the people of Goa and the Congress candidate was talking to the people who had opted for Portuguese passports in the meeting. Also, speaking at the campaign meeting, Fernandes said that in 1961, Nehru, who was the Prime Minister at the time, had said that Goa would decide its future. But that didn’t happen, he said.
Meanwhile, Fernandez also shared information about the discussion he had with Rahul Gandhi during the Lok Sabha elections 2019. In that meeting, we presented 12 demands. One of these was the granting of dual citizenship to the citizens of Goa. Then Rahul said, is this according to the constitution? Then we said no. Also, the Congress leader has promised that if it is not against the constitution, we will consider this demand.
