More money will land in the pockets of Canadian families on Friday for the latest installment of the Canada Child Benefit (CCB).

The federal government program helps low and middle income families struggling with the high cost of raising a child.

Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or refugees who provide primary care to children under the age of 18 are eligible for the program, which was introduced in 2016.

The tax-free monthly payments are based on a family’s net income and the number of children they have. Families with an adjusted net income below $34,863 will receive the maximum amount per child.

For a child under six years of age, an applicant can receive up to $7,437 per child each year, and up to $6,275 per child for children between six and 17 years of age.

That equates to up to $619.75 per month for the younger cohort and $522.91 per month for the older group.

The benefit is recalculated every July and most recently increased by 6.3 per cent in order to adjust to the rate of inflation, and the cost of living.

To apply, an applicant can submit through a child’s birth registration, fill out an online form or post in an application to a tax office.

The next payment date will be on 17 May.
