The Bombay High Court said that compensation is not an award in cases of death due to Corona. With this comment, the High Court rejected the petition of a widowed woman. Kanchan Hamashta, a resident of Nand district in Maharashtra, filed a petition in the High Court demanding compensation for her husband’s death. The wife said in the petition that her husband died in April 2021 and he was doing work that is included in essential services. The wife claimed that her husband was deployed by the state government itself, but he got infected in Corona and died. The woman demanded from the High Court that the court order the state government to consider her demand for compensation.

The Aurangabad Bench of the Bombay High Court dismissed the petition. A division bench of Justice Ravindra Ghuge and Justice RM Joshi said the Maharashtra government was not wrong in dismissing the woman’s petition seeking compensation of Rs 50 lakh. The court said that there is no debate that such cases should be treated with sensitivity, but on the other hand it should also be remembered that those who are not entitled to receive 50 HL as compensation should not be given this amount. They cannot be given as a reward. If such cases are handled carelessly, then the ineligible people They will also receive compensation of 50 lakhs from the taxpayers’ money.
In fact, during the Corona epidemic, the Maharashtra government announced the provision of accident insurance of Rs 50 lakh to workers engaged in essential work. This accident insurance is only given to those who were engaged in an active role such as surveying, locating, monitoring, testing and treatment, etc. during the corona virus.
