Due to the unusually warm and early spring this year, blueberries have already started to bloom in Ukraine – earlier than usual. Looks like the berry season will start earlier. But what are the consequences? This was reported by Yagidnyk, a writer of agronews.ua.

The blueberry orchard of the “TM Stynava organic garden” company is located in the village of Verkhnya Stynava, Lviv region, and is considered the highest altitude in Ukraine.

According to manager Bohdan Bodner, the 2024 season is the fourth for the young blueberry orchard, but this year the plants bloomed so early for the first time:

“The flowering in our orchard this year began on April 10 and now most of the field is already blooming. Instead, last year the blueberries bloomed a month later – in the first half of May. But it is worth noting that such early flowering can cause negative results for plants. Yes, we expect Snow and temperatures down to 0 this weekend aboutC, or even lower. I mean, some days will be quite chilly. And the problem is that plants in this condition are not at risk from cold weather like catching wet snow. After all, the bushes already have leaves and flowers, so the snow can harm the plants – break them or bend them to the ground.”

Bohdan Bodner points out that in such a situation there is no way to prepare blueberries for snowfall. Instead, the plants can be treated with some kind of anti-stress drug, so that they more easily survive this stress, but such a sharp change in temperature in 2 days out of 24 aboutfrom 2 aboutC will still have a negative effect on them.

“Such weather conditions can affect the quality of the future blueberry harvest, its quantity and its availability in general. We hope that the snow will not have a critical effect on the plantation and such a drop in temperature will slow down the vegetation a little and stop the flowering of the bushes for at least 7-10 days,” said the head of the company. Organic garden” (Organic garden of TM Stynava).

According to him, in order to improve the quality and quantity of the harvest, bumble bees are also used in the factory, but due to such a sudden warming, they simply did not have time to bring them. Therefore, plants are pollinated by native bumble bees and forest insects.
