Guwahati: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, claiming the defense of alibi, informed the court that he was not present in Delhi when one of the wrestlers filed a complaint against him for alleged sexual harassment. A Delhi court has deferred its ruling on filing charges against Singh, the former president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), following his request for further investigation into the case.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Priyanka Rajput reserved the order on Singh’s plea, which is due on April 26. The prosecution opposed Singh’s request, denouncing it as a delaying tactic and arguing that it was actually asking for further investigation.

The court was expected to rule on the filing of charges against Singh, who is accused of sexual harassment, stalking, outraged modesty and criminal intimidation by certain female wrestlers. Six wrestlers came forward with allegations of sexual harassment against Singh, prompting the police to file a First Information Report (FIR).

On 15 June 2023, the police charged Singh under sections 354, 354A, 354D and 506(1) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The complainants first approached the Supreme Court seeking an FIR against Singh.

Subsequently, the Delhi Police confirmed to the Supreme Court that an FIR had been filed and that the investigation was underway. Additionally, a minor female wrestler accused Singh of misconduct, but later withdrew her complaint. As a result, the Delhi Police filed a cancellation report under the Child Protection Act Sexual Offenses (POCSO Act).
