This time in Reel to Real, the Dainik Bhaskar team arrived at Filmistan Studios in Goregaon, Mumbai. The shooting of the reality show Dance Deewane was going on there.

We often watch reality shows on TV. Sometimes it comes to mind if these reality shows are really real. What is shown on TV, is it really true? To know the answers to these questions, we reached Filmistan Studio in Goregaon, Mumbai.

The set of the reality show Dance Deewane was installed there. We spoke to the creative directors and some contestants there. During the conversation it was revealed that reality shows are not scripted, only certain things are controlled in advance.

The most interesting thing came out of the audience. In reality shows, the audience is invited by paying money. Rs 500 to 1000 is given per person. They have to sit in one place and watch the whole show for 12 hours.

We talked about these points in the new episode of Reel to Real..

  • How to coordinate with the audience that sits in reality shows?
  • How much money do celebrities raise sitting on the judge’s chair?
  • How much money do anchors and hosts take?
  • What is the process of selecting contestants?
  • What is the budget of a reality show?

Shooting takes place only one day a week, two episodes are completed in a day.
Arvind, the creative director of Dance Deewane said, ‘The shooting of the show takes place only one day a week. Two episodes are shot in a day. Shifts of 12 hours in a day are set. From the judge to the audience, 12 hours of non-stop time must be given without going anywhere. There is a short lunch break in between. The production team always tries to shoot one episode before dinner and one episode after dinner.

The audience is invited by paying money
Many questions arise regarding the audience of reality shows. Are these ordinary people, or are they called after paying money? Arvind also answered this. He said, ‘The audience is invited. These are not ordinary people. They also have a society. There are many people in the audience who have been attending one show or another as spectators for the last 10 years. About 70 people sit as guests in our show. A person is given Rs 500 to 1000 for sitting in the audience.

You must feel after reading here that the audience’s job is very good, that they are paid and also get to see the performance of celebrities and talented contestants. However, there is another aspect to this as well. Sitting in one place for 12 hours is a difficult task in itself. Their activity begins to decrease and they begin to tire. In such a situation, the audience coordinator comes and appeals to him to become active again.

They go to big cities and choose rivals.
The biggest question is how are the contestants chosen? Dance creative director Deewane Arvind also replied, ‘We go to every big city in the country and look for contestants from there. We select 100 people, of which 30 are drawn. In the end, there are 70 contestants left who are brought before the judge.

Apart from this, we contact many dance coordinators and those who run dance schools. We tell them our requirements and what kind of competitor we want. Those who express their wish to join the show are first asked to make a dance video. After this they are met physically. If the person in front of him understands, then we invite him to the show.

The creative team travels from city to city to select candidates.
Arvind said that he completes all the auditions in a city in just one day. Which means, the candidates of the city where they have to go are notified in advance. The production team decides on a location and sets up camp there. All the candidates go there and give an audition, the selected ones are invited to come to Mumbai.

On one hand, the creative team travels from city to city to select candidates, while on the other hand, the production team continues to prepare the sets in Mumbai. Both tasks continue to occur simultaneously. It takes 22 to 25 days to make the set. The same number of days will be taken to select the candidates. All in all, the shooting of the show starts within two months.

There are 17 cameras placed around the stage
How many cameras are needed to show such a big show on TV from every angle? Arvind said, ’17 cameras are being used. Two or three cameras are used to keep the judges in the middle. Apart from this, two cameras are used to show the contestant’s family members. There are 4 cameras placed on the stage. Two cameras have also been installed to show the performance of the competitors.

Heavy cameras are used on the sets. There is a professional team to deal with these too.

You must have seen that sometimes tributes are given to celebrities in reality shows. Some private photos are also used in the background. If the actor’s family wants, they can also collect money from the production houses for those pictures.

No cuts or retakes between performances
Once the contestants start dancing, they make it to the end without any interruptions. Don’t stop in the middle. Not if you forget that step you have to start over. Once the performance starts, it stops after only two or three minutes.

The creative team ensures that the songs are well chosen so that the audience enjoys listening and watching. If the songs are boring then it directly affects the TRP of the show.

If costumes do not match, they are changed overnight
A lot of attention is also given to the contestant’s outfit. On Sunday, the day before the actual shoot, all the contestants are asked to dance in their costumes. If a particular contestant’s outfit does not seem to match the song or the lighting of the show, then it will be changed overnight.

Hotel arrangements are made for the competitors to stay
Appropriate accommodation and food arrangements are made for the contestants by the production house. A contestant said on set, ‘The production house takes care of every basic feature of ours. There is a hotel for our stay, we can stay there as per our wish. Laundry is also available for laundry. Apart from this, there is a 24 hour medical facility.
