The proposal comes over Mr Harvie’s failure to say whether he accepts the findings of the Cass Review in an interview on Monday.

When asked five times if he accepts the report, the minister refused to say, claiming instead that it was “politicized and weaponised” against trans people.

The review – published earlier this month – highlighted a lack of evidence for some treatments for transgender young people and decried the “toxic” debate surrounding the issue.

The proposal would need the support of another 25 members in the Senedd before it could force a vote, but the combined numbers of the SNP and the Greens would probably be enough to save Mr Harvie’s job.

Ms Regan – who left the SNP for Alba last year – said: “The motion of no confidence speaks for itself. The Scottish Greens wish to side with ideology over clinical evidence.

“I am hopeful that MLAs will put good governance first, ahead of party lines, and support the proposal.”

The proposal creates an awkward situation for some SNP MLAs who are known for their critical stance on gender and their opposition to the Greens.

Fergus Ewing was banned from the party group at Holyrood for a week after voting for a similar motion to sack fellow Green leader and Government minister Lorna Slater, meaning disciplinary action could be taken against those who n challenging the SNP whip this time.

The proposal comes as the senior SNP MP supports the power sharing agreement between the two parties.

Alison Thewliss, MP for Glasgow Central, said the Bute House Agreement “brought together the best of our parties and the best of our policies”.

Speaking on BBC Radio Scotland on Tuesday, he said: “I was very much in support of the Bute House Agreement.

“I believe that the partnership with the Greens has brought together the best of our parties and the best of our policies and we will support it to stay.”

Asked if she believed SNP members should have a vote on the deal, she said: “From the SNP members I’ve been talking to over the weekend, I don’t see that many people calls for that.

“That may be something we wish to consider, but I certainly support the Bute House Agreement and I think that has been a positive thing.”
