In Bahadurgarh, Haryana, a YouTuber couple committed suicide by jumping from the 7th floor of the building. 25-year-old Garvit and 22-year-old Nandini were content creators who used to make short videos for YouTube and Facebook. Both had come to Bahadurgarh from Dehradun.

He also had a team of 5 people to shoot the video. When they reached home after completing the shoot late at night, there was a fight between Garvit and Nandini over some issue. They both committed suicide by jumping from the building. The event is on 13 April 2024.

Earlier, on January 7, 2024, in Begusarai, Bihar, the woman had killed her husband after he stopped him from making reels. Maheshwar Rai’s wife Rani was addicted to making reels on Instagram. Ignoring her family, she stayed busy making reels.

Making reels, uploading them on social media, doing crazy things to get more people to like her, being friends with a lot of guys would have pissed off her husband. When her husband protested, she strangled Rani along with her lover Maheshwar.

There are frequent reports of accidents while making reels and short videos, but now apart from fights, suicides and murders are also on the rise.

An addiction to making reels is like an addiction to alcohol.

Reel addiction is like alcohol addiction. Once one gets addicted to it, it is very difficult to get rid of it. Anup, 18, who lives in Ranchi, did not go to college for 2 months. He also wouldn’t leave the house and wouldn’t eat or drink properly.

For the last 3-4 days he has stopped eating and drinking completely. He would stay up all night. The parents took him to the Central Institute of Psychiatry (CIP).

After consulting the doctors, he said he used to go to different places and make short videos and upload them on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. He made 65-70 videos but the viewership did not increase.

He started getting frustrated when he didn’t get likes and comments. He would check his phone every minute to see if anyone liked or commented. He hoped that subscribers would increase after watching his videos.

But when this did not happen he lost his sleep. Hunger and thirst are all gone.

CIP Professor Dr Varun S Mehta says that people start considering themselves unsuccessful when they don’t get name fame, likes-views and comments on social media.

This is due to social media addiction. People are eager to gain overnight fame in the virtual world and when they don’t get the desired results, they go into depression.

The purpose of a 10-15 second reel is to collect millions of likes.

The word influencer is trending on social media. Stunting on a bike on the divider, driving a lahariyakat in a crowded market, doing stunts by sitting on the bonnet of a moving car, making videos of jumping from a bridge to a river, the aim of making videos is to collect more and more likes and subscribers.

These reels last 10-15 seconds. The more sensation these videos create, the more public response they get. More than a dozen influencers have been fined or arrested in Delhi in recent days.

Anshul Chaudhary from Delhi was fined Rs 12,500 for performing a stunt on a busy road in Shastri Nagar Park area. Anshul has 5,000 followers on Instagram.

While social media influencer Pradeep Dhaka performed stunts in ‘Golden SUV’. Because of this the traffic was disrupted. Pradeep has a million followers on Instagram. Pradeep had to pay a fine of Rs 36,000.

Whether it’s making reels sitting on a Mercedes bonnet or coloring two girls sitting on a scooter on Holi, all are ways to get instant likes and views.

Young people are ready to do anything that puts their lives at risk.

At Banar Cantt station in Jodhpur, 3 boys were making a reel sitting on a scooter. A goods train was coming from behind on the track and these squatties were advancing on the platform. If his balance had been slightly off, he would have fallen straight onto the track.

Three boys were making reels for the oncoming freight train on the river bridge near Latehar railway station in Jharkhand. One died on the spot while two were seriously injured after being hit by the train.

In fact, the trend of making reels is more among the youth of 20 to 25 years. Ayushi Sharma, a researcher at the Dayalbagh Educational Institute, Agra, says that these youngsters, known as ‘Instagram influencers’, have an average of 1-2 lakh followers.

They spend all their energy trying to do something strange, unheard of, ignored. They come up with a complete strategy so that the reels are shot in such a way that the viewers are left speechless. ‘Content Creator’ is written in his profile. Content means risk, danger. The greater the risk, the more opinions and preferences.

Once money is made, there will be no looking back.

Psychiatrist Dr Harshal Sathe says that the youngsters who make Instagram reels or make short videos take it as a career. They feel that once the content is monetized, it will rain money.

It looks like some filmic glamor to them. There are many influencers ahead of them who gain millions of followers by doing various stunts and dangerous things. He considers him as his role model.

The youth not only see this platform as a way to earn money but also want to show themselves as ‘macho men’. If people watch his videos, they will be shocked.

While boys make adventure reels or videos, girls make fashion, beauty, make-up and emotional videos.

All the hard work is done to become popular on social media and to stay in limelight, and sometimes the price has to be paid with life and property.
