Seoul (International Desk) Scientists have claimed to be developing a battery that can be charged in just a few seconds.

A South Korean team has made this breakthrough by developing next-generation sodium batteries, which are cheaper and safer than traditional lithium-ion batteries used in smart phones and electric cars.

Sodium has 500 times the world’s reserves of lithium, while it also has a higher charge and performance capacity than lithium-ion batteries.

Prior to this development, sodium-ion batteries were produced and used on a limited scale rather than a large scale due to their long charging times and lack of storage capacity.

However, researchers at the Korea Institute of Advanced Science and Technology (KAIST) have been able to overcome these problems by developing a high-energy and high-power sodium-ion battery capable of rapid charging.

They did this by combining common materials used in batteries, suitable for supercapacitors, and used in everything from regenerative braking systems in electric cars to adjusting the pitch of wind turbine rotor blades.

The new battery exceeds the energy density of commercial lithium-ion batteries and can be used in electric vehicles and consumer electronics.

Professor Jeong Kuo Kang from KAIST’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering, who led the research, said: ‘The hybrid sodium-ion energy storage device is a tool that can be used for fast charging and has an energy density of 247 watt-hours 34,748 watts per kilogram and can achieve an energy density of up to 34,748 watts per kilogram.’

“This is a major step forward in overcoming the current limitations of energy storage systems,” he added.

They expect it to be used in a wider range of applications and various electronic devices.

The title of this research is ‘Low crystalline conductive multivalence iron S-doped anode and high surface area O-doped cathode of N-rich porous 3D graphitic carbon frameworks for high performance sodium-ion hybrid energy storage’ Published in the journal Storage Materials’ .

The breakthrough comes just weeks after a team of researchers in Japan discovered a new process to mass produce solid sodium batteries.

The new technology could potentially eliminate these issues by significantly improving the charging capacity of electric car batteries and doubling the range of existing EVs.
