A Montreal law firm wants to take legal action against Tim Hortons after 500,000 customers received emails claiming they had won a boat and trailer.

The emails, it turned out, were sent by mistake. Montreal law firm LPC Avocats is seeking to launch a class action

Michelle Strodove, a single mother in Montreal, was one of the half million people who were initially emailed that they were winning. When she didn’t believe it, she even went to Tim Hortons to make sure it was real and was told it was with the manager who told her.

Finding out it’s not real is pretty devastating, especially when you’re going through tough times. I got this big rush of excitement,” she told CTV News. “I was excited and happy and then to go and find out it’s not real, it’s kind of disappointing and disappointing.”

Starodov is now part of a Facebook group set up as many others share their disappointment and frustration with the multinational.

“When we became aware of the error, we quickly emailed guests informing them of the error and apologizing,” Tim Hortons wrote in an email to CTV News. “Despite this human error, we firmly believe that there is no point in the lawsuit and we will handle it through the court.”

Attorney Joey Zukran says, given the fact that this isn’t the first time Tim Hortons has had a problem with competition, he thinks the case has merit.

The class action petition still needs to be approved by a judge before it can proceed.
