The boy was stopped by worshipers at the Church of Christ the Good Shepherd before being arrested by the police and taken to a medical facility for treatment.
Emanuel, 53 years old, suffered significant head injuries. Father Yitzchak Royal, 3, also suffered cuts and a wound to the shoulder when he tried to intervene, police said.
This afternoon, the boy was interviewed by counter-terrorism officers, who subsequently charged him with committing an act of terrorism, NSW Police said in a statement.
The boy was refused bail and will appear in court tomorrow for a hearing at the bedside.
The charge of committing a terrorist act carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
Emmanuel, in his first message since the attack, said today that he forgives the boy.
