Climate change affects the entire world, but the World Meteorological Organization says Asian countries are most affected by climate change. For this reason, Asia remains the most disaster-affected region in the world in 2023. Last year, due to floods and cyclones in Asia, a large number of people lost their lives and suffered economic losses.

Disaster events have increased in Asia

The World Meteorological Organization has released a report called Asia’s Climate 2023. The report states that water temperatures in the northwest Pacific Ocean are rising to record levels, with marine heat waves blowing even in the Arctic. Celeste Saulo, Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization, said that the year 2023 was record hot in many Asian countries. Along with this, effects of floods, droughts, storms and hot winds were seen. Due to climate change, the speed of disasters in Asia has greatly increased. Which affects our society in economic loss, loss of human life and environment.

79 disasters happened in Asia last year

The report states that 79 hydro-meteorological disasters occurred in Asia last year. 80 percent of these disasters were related to floods and storms. Due to these, more than two thousand people lost their lives in Asia last year and 90 lakh were injured. According to the report, the year 2023 was 0.91 degrees warmer than the average temperature of 1991-2020. At the same time, it was 1.87 degrees Celsius warmer than the 1961-1990 average temperature. Record heat was in Japan and Kazakhstan.

The amount of precipitation was also lower than usual

There was a severe heat wave in India between April and June, as a result of which 110 people died. Southeast Asia was affected by a heat wave between April and May, affecting Bangladesh, eastern India and northern and southern China. Due to climate change, the Turan Plain (Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan), the Hindu Kush region (Afghanistan, Pakistan), the lower reaches of the Ganges and the Brahmaputra in the Himalayas (India, Bangladesh), the Arakan Mountains (Myanmar) as well as the lower regions of the Mekong River recorded less rain than usual .

Flood events are increasing in desert areas

Last year, the problem of drought and low rainfall was seen in southwest China. India also received less rainfall in the monsoon season. Floods and storms occurred in many places in India, Pakistan and Nepal in June, July and August, with more than 600 deaths. Whereas incidents of heavy rains and floods occurred in desert areas such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen. The World Meteorological Organization reported that the snow is melting rapidly in the mountainous regions of Asia, due to which the ice glaciers in the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau are shrinking. The organization warned that the sea level will rise due to the melting of the glaciers. Sea levels in the Philippines and eastern Japan are rising three times faster than average.
