The Bengal government has proposed new names for the lion and lioness brought from Tripura to the Central Zoo Authority (CZA). According to the government’s proposal, the name of the lion will be Suraj instead of Akbar and the name of the lioness Sita will be Tanya. There were many disputes about the name of the lion and the lioness Akbar and Sita kept in the same compound.

Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) appealed in the Calcutta High Court in this regard.

They said that naming a lioness Sita is insulting. During its hearing, the Jalpaiguri bench said that retaining controversial names should be avoided. Justice Saugata Bhattacharya said he was not in favor of naming the second lion after the Mughal emperor Akbar.

Once the name is approved, it will be entered in the records.

A forest department official said we have sent the names to the CZA. Now it remains for them to keep these names or give them a digital name. If the names are approved then they will be entered into the records. If the couple gives birth to puppies in the future then the parents of the puppies will be recorded as Suraj and Tanya. A Bengal Safari official declined to comment as the matter was beyond judgment.
