Kolkata: Darjeeling was a stronghold in the Padma camp even when the BJP did not come to power in Bengal. Jashwant Singh in 2009, Surender Singh Aluwalia in 2014, Raju Bista in 2019. But BJP has changed candidates every time before this. For the first time in 2024, ending all speculations, the BJP has trusted the winning candidate of the last time, Raju Bista. The Bharatiya Janata Party has given a ticket to outgoing MP Raju Bista on the BJP’s second-phase candidate list in Bengal.
Even before the polls were announced, there were rumors that the BJP candidate might change in Darjeeling. From fighting to retain Gorkha votes, various equations were emerging. But a large section of the party wanted Raju Bista. On March 9, on the day of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting in Siliguri, Raju said, “This time there will be no change in the hills.” Finally, after announcing the list of candidates, Padma Shibir believed in Bista.
For the past few days, it was heard that former bureaucrat Shringla might be the BJP candidate in Darjeeling. It was also believed that if Shringla wins, Modi can give him an important central ministry. He is close to the BJP top leadership. But finally Padma Shibir gave the ticket to the outgoing MP. Raju Bista is happy to get the ticket for the second time. There is also confidence to increase the lead from last time.

Incidentally, after announcing the names of candidates in 20 constituencies in the first phase, BJP announced candidates in 19 constituencies in the second phase on Sunday. The names of the candidates for the 19 constituencies of Bengal were announced from the BJP headquarters in Delhi on Sunday evening. Ever since the announcement, the wall writing has started and the publicity has been rampant.
