The European climate agency Copernicus Climate Change Service says April 2024 is set to be the hottest month on record. There was extreme heat in April 2024 and during this period, life was severely affected by disasters like floods, drought, rain all over the world. This is the 11th month in a row that record temperatures have been recorded. The increase in temperature is attributed to the El Nino effect and climate change.

The average temperature rise

According to the report, the average temperature in April was 15.03 degrees Celsius, which is 1.58 degrees Celsius higher than the temperature in the pre-industrial period between 1850-1900. Whereas compared to 1991-2020, the average temperature of April 2024 was higher by 0.67 degrees Celsius. Earlier, the highest temperature was recorded in April 2016, but April 2024 broke that record as well. Carlo Buonotempo, director of the Copernicus climate agency, said that the El Nino effect peaked earlier this year, but now the surface temperature of the eastern Pacific Ocean is moving back towards normal, despite the sea surface temperature still rising and it is believed that a record temperature was recorded in April 2024.

The agency said in its report that the global temperature was the highest recorded in the last 12 months and is 1.61 degrees Celsius higher than before the industrial era (1850-1900). Countries around the world must try to limit the increase in the average global temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, otherwise there could be serious consequences.

Fear of a loss of NIS 38 million per year

According to a recent study by Germany’s Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, the global economy may have to suffer a loss of around $38 million each year by 2049 due to climate change. Especially countries that are not responsible for climate change will suffer the most because of climate change.

Asian countries are dealing with the heat problem these days and even schools in the Philippines had to close. These days, deadly heat waves are wreaking havoc in India as well. At the same time, the highest amount of precipitation was recorded in the United Arab Emirates in its 75-year history. The meteorological department says that now the La Nina effect has started to form, due to which good rains are expected in India in the months of August-September.
