Although retail inflation is slowing down in India, the problems of common people still remain the same. Due to rising temperatures and climate change, the common man may have to pay higher prices for a plate of food in the coming days.

In fact, this year a greater impact of climate change on the weather is evident. Compared to previous years, many countries are experiencing severe heat. The outbreak of the heat wave has been evident in the states since April. The Indian Meteorological Department also said that the number of days of extreme heat wave between April and June this year could be more than 10-20 days. This is almost double compared to last year. The effect of the rising temperature will be visible not only on people’s bodies but also on their food plates. Due to extreme heat, the supply of essential grains such as wheat as well as coffee, dairy products and fish may be affected. Due to disruptions in supply, their availability in the market will be affected, which will directly affect the food plates.

In a discussion with Amar Ojala, agricultural scientist DK Tiwari says that as predicted by the meteorological department, this time the maximum and minimum temperatures will also touch new levels. It would also exceed the limits of human survival. Due to heat waves, not only the prices of vegetarian and non-vegetarian thali will increase, but their taste may also be different. Apart from this, there may also be an increase in the prices of many food products. Changes can also be seen in the existing supply chain.

Vegetable prices may rise until June

According to the data of the Ministry of Agriculture, the onion production in the Rabi season is estimated at 190.5 lakh tons. This is 20 percent less than last year. According to the first preliminary estimate for the years 2023-2024, the total production of horticultural crops is estimated at 35 million tons. Production in 2022-23 was 355.5 million tons. The people of Azadpur Mandi Vegetable Traders Association say that currently vegetable prices have come down. But once the temperature rises, vegetable prices may rise. From April last year to March this year, the contribution of vegetables to the cost of food products was about 30 percent.

There may be a decrease in wheat production

According to recent research by the NGO Uncharted Waters, extreme heat after winter can reduce yields by about 20% in many wheat-producing countries. Due to this, the total wheat production may decrease by 5 to 10 percent. According to studies, the higher the mercury, the greater the chance of crop failure. In the summer, due to poor refrigeration facilities in many places, the chance of spoilage of fruits and vegetables increases.
