Approaching his district critics, he declared: “We tend to like a good tip failure. That’s what disappoints me the most. We tend to like a good failure.”

He described the Munster Championship as the ‘county of death’, adding: “Really glad the players and us as a team got our heads around a performance last weekend which was unacceptable. We have no problem with that. Some of the analysis was very much justified, certainly was justified, but some of it wasn’t was

“Really proud of the way we fought right to the end of a game that more or less got away from us. We got chances to win the game before, to be fair, but really proud of the way we are as a team, this group of players, as management and the backroom staff, everyone connected to the formation circled the wagons this week

“We are really grateful to the supporters in the stands today, they were absolutely great. They will support this team every day as soon as we fight. That’s the main thing. And we fought for everything today. We as a team fought and that’s all we’re looking for.”

Reflecting back on their 15-point loss to Limerick in the first round, Cahill said: “The blow came from within last week. Your emotions go wrong when things go wrong on the big stage in a Tipperary shirt. We as a team are never going to not fight or die with our boots on the pitch. We never intend to do it.

“We always intend to come and make the people of Tipperary proud to watch their flagship team perform. So we took huge ownership of what happened last weekend. We took huge ownership of it because we had to.

“We’ve got it for the rest of our lives. I’ve got, maybe, some of my comments afterwards. I own it and it’s a heck of a lot. We’re just drawing a line under it now and moving forward with this show and still trying to make sure we’re fit out of this Munster county of death.

“Let’s see if we can collect a few more points. There are four more on offer. If we can perform again, and we will have to perform again at a decent level, even better than we showed today, we will obviously have a chance to advance in the championship. This is our golden goal in the next two weeks.”

Cahill agreed that the Tipperary substitutes had made a valuable contribution.

“Without our bench today, we would have gone home empty-handed. The ever-fighting Bonner (Maher) got there, John McGrath was top-notch, youngster (Sheaney) Kennelly (who scored 1-1), Dara Sticklum made his debut In the championship, he was excellent today, he never gave up.

“We’ve got some good young lads coming to Tipperary. Our U20s were phenomenal last night and they’re in the Munster final. We tend to like a good tip-off. That’s what disappoints me the most. We tend to like a good tip-off.

“Really, we should be privileged in the position we’re in. We’re not where we want to be. Of course, we want to win the All-Ireland and dine at the top table every year.

“But we are where we are and we have a lot of really good people and good players at the highest level fighting to get it and get back into the top table as I said,” he said.
