Thomas Midgley Jr. was a chemical engineer at General Motors in 1924. He made two of the biggest game-changing discoveries of the 20th century. To support this discovery, he performed a stunt with a lead compound also known as tetraethyl, which was later added and discovered gasoline. Gasoline solved one of the biggest problems facing the automobile industry at the time. These problems included engine failure, small explosions in the car’s engine due to low quality gasoline, which caused loud noises.
This discovery solved this problem but it had to pay a heavy price. This substance is very toxic to humans, especially children. For this reason, even after nearly 70 years since Thomas Midgley’s death in 1944, he is considered a person who has done more damage to the world than any other person.
This search is both a problem and a solution.
Midgley left his mark on history with another devastating invention that also solved a problem. It was necessary to replace the harmful and flammable gases used in refrigeration and air conditioning. They discovered that CFCs, i.e. chlorofluorocarbons, were an ideal alternative and harmless to humans. However, these have been found to be harmful to ozone in the atmosphere, which blocks dangerous ultraviolet radiation that can cause skin cancer and other health problems as well as harm plants and animals.
