The 14-month-old German shepherd was brought to the RSPCA’s York Animal Shelter off Landing Lane because his previous owner could no longer provide for him.

Now he is ready to find a new home to call home.

Zoo staff say he is ‘a great dog who is active, playful and intelligent’.

He is said to love fuss and attention – but because he can get excited and still needs training, he is not suitable for a first-time dog owner.

His new adopters will need to be prepared to take him to training classes as well as teach him that it’s okay to be alone, the RSPCA says.

He will also need to be the only pet in an adult-only home.

A member of staff who has helped care for Douglas since he arrived at the zoo said: “Douglas is undergoing further training on our behavioral side and will need braves willing to continue his training.

“Douglas is a super smart dog and loves working with his people and learning new things.

“He is young and sometimes forgets his manners and gets a little excited, so Douglas is not suitable for a first-time dog owner.”

Douglas is a ‘bright spark’ who loves to play and go outside.

“He will need active efforts that will not only give him the physical activity he needs, but will also be able to keep him mentally stimulated,” said the staff member.

“But he has so much potential and he will truly make someone the most loyal and loving friend.”

RSPCA York Animal Home is an independent animal shelter and relies on the support and funding of local supporters to enable it to rehome hundreds of cats, dogs, small animals and wildlife each year.
