Commenting on the newly released videos, state minister and senior TMC leader Shashi Panja condemned the BJP for “perpetuating a false narrative about the sexual assaults in Sandeshchal” and threatened victims who sought to withdraw their police complaints.
“Sandashkali victims may have had some complaints of land grabbing. But they never had complaints of sex offences. This again proves that the BJP is spreading lies. This despicable act of fabrication and intimidation will not go unpunished,” Panja said.
LOP West Bengal Suvendu Adhikari, on the other hand, rejected the TMC’s claims saying that the videos were produced by “brother‘ (nephew), an oblique reference to TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee and the party’s private political adviser, I-PAC, who “disbursed money” to get the job done.
“We will soon file a court case against both of them and make sure that they are taken to task for spreading such malicious lies,” Adhikari said, while attending Rekha Patra’s nomination rally in Basirhat.
BJP Rajya Sabha MP and party spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya told reporters that the more such videos surfaced, the higher the vote margin for the BJP from the Sandeshkhali assembly segment, which is part of the Basirhat Lok Sabha constituency.
Bhattacharya said the state government itself had prepared a list of those whose land plots were taken by TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh, who was later arrested and suspended by the party, and started the process of returning the disputed land.
