Police in Burlington, Vt. claims its residents find AirTags and other GPS tracking devices on vehicles returning from Montreal.

The Burlington police said last week that they received two separate reports in the past month from residents who discovered the devices in their vehicles.

The force says that the technology is placed there by criminals, and asks anyone who notices a suspicious device on their vehicle to call the police.

The warning comes as police forces across Canada grapple with rising levels of car theft, with criminals using increasingly fast and sophisticated methods to track and steal desired vehicles.

Toronto police and others have warned that would-be car thieves are using devices like Apple AirTags to mark and track vehicles that will later be stolen.

Police said they are also concerned about the speed with which criminals are able to steal cars by using various methods to bypass anti-theft technology, including by hacking on-board diagnostics.
