Union minister Sarbananda Sonoval has filed for the Dibrugarh parliamentary seat Achi-News

GUWAHATI: Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal, accompanied by chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, formally filed his nomination papers on March 26 as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate for the Dibrugarh parliamentary constituency in Assam.

The nomination took place in front of Election Officer Bikram Kairi, according to media reports.

Elections for the Dibrugarh constituency are scheduled for April 19, marking the start of the electoral process in Assam, which boasts a total of 14 Lok Sabha seats.

Alongside CM Sarma, Sonowal was joined by prominent political figures, including Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) president Atul Bora, United People’s Liberal Party (UPPL) leader Pramod Bodhu, BJP MLA and Union Minister Rameswar Talley, and state party president Bahash Kalita.

Sonowal, currently serving as the Union Minister for Shipping, Ports, Waterways and Manpower, has a history with the Dibrugarh constituency, having represented it in 2004 as an AGP candidate. In the upcoming elections he will face competition from the United Opposition Front of Assam (UOFA) candidate Lorinjioti Gogoi.

The first phase of polls in Assam will see contests in five constituencies – Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Jorhat, Kaziranga and Sonitpur.
