The vote came after Russia and China vetoed a US-sponsored resolution supporting an immediate and permanent ceasefire in the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

The United States has warned that the approved resolution could damage negotiations between the United States, Egypt and Qatar to end the war, raising the possibility of another veto, this time by the Americans.

As Ramadan ends next month, the call for a ceasefire will only last for two weeks, although the document says a pause in the fighting could lead to a “lasting sustainable ceasefire”.
