Ukraine continues to expand the geography of fresh onion exports. The main market for these vegetables remains Romania, where almost 2,000 tons of products are sent every month. Moldova remains in second place in terms of export volumes. Also, significant shipments of Ukrainian onions are sent to Bulgaria, Austria and Montenegro. It is interesting to note that in January 2024, the first wholesale batches of fresh onions from Ukraine were released to the British market. This direction is atypical for the supply of onions from Ukraine, but very promising, especially in seasons like this one, when there is a shortage of onions in Europe.
It should be noted that today there are quite a few reasons for expanding onion exports from Ukraine. As you can see in the graph, Ukrainian onion prices are currently at one of the lowest levels in history – about 31 US cents per kg. Let us remind you that in just one year, Ukrainian vegetable growers helped consumers in the country save more than 30 billion UAH on traditional vegetables alone!
In addition, Ukrainian onions are currently sold much cheaper than onions in the EU countries or in Moldova. Even in Poland, which, thanks to massive onion imports from Russia, has the lowest onion prices in the European Union, onion prices are on average 40% higher than in Ukraine.
The difference in wholesale onion prices between Ukraine and the Netherlands, the largest onion exporter in the European Union, is now almost double, which makes it possible to create opportunities for further expansion of the geography of export supply.
