A cosmetic treatment known as “vampire facial treatment” is considered a cheap and less invasive alternative to facelifts.

However, according to a new report, the procedure can pose a significant health risk if performed under unsanitary conditions.

Earlier this week, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported that three women apparently contracted the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) after receiving vampire facials at an unlicensed spa in New Mexico.

These cases are the first known cases of transmission of the virus during a cosmetic injection procedure, according to a CDC report earlier this week. CBS News report.

According to one skin clinic, during a vampire facial, a person’s blood is drawn from their arm, then the platelets are separated and applied to the patient’s face using microneedles.

The procedure, also known as platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is claimed by proponents to help reduce the size of pores and fine lines, as well as to rejuvenate the skin.

However, many people with no known risk factors for HIV likely contracted the virus through vampire facials at the since-closed facility, the CDC report said.

“This investigation is the first to link HIV transmission to non-sterile cosmetic injection services,” it said.

American media personality Kim Kardashian underwent the cosmetic procedure in 2013 but has since come out against the procedure.

According to the CDC, people considering injections for medical or aesthetic purposes are advised to inquire about the license and training of a doctor, clinic or spa, as well as Food and Drug Administration approval and a reputable supplier of any item used.

The CDC adds that some states have a search tool to verify licensure.
