“We encourage relevant countries to tell the truth about the South China Sea issue, as well as China’s territorial sovereignty, maritime rights, and the efforts of regional countries to maintain peace and stability in the South China Sea,” said Lin Jian.

India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is currently on a visit to the Philippines. In a joint press conference after bilateral talks with Philippine Foreign Secretary Enrique Manalo on Tuesday, he reiterated India’s continued support to the Philippines in maintaining its national sovereignty. The spat between India and China over the South China Sea has come to light at a time when the dispute between the two countries is at its peak due to China’s recent statements regarding Arunachal Pradesh. India has dismissed China’s claim that Arunachal Pradesh is part of its territory as absurd and ridiculous.

What is the South China Sea dispute?

China’s claim to the South China Sea is disputed. Located between Indonesia and Vietnam, this sea area covers 35 lakh square kilometers. This sea is surrounded by Indonesia, China, Philippines, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia and Brunei. There is a dispute between China and the Philippines over the Scarborough and Spratly Islands. China considers them as part of it. However, the Philippines claims that it has rights over both islands.
