The criticism of the junior partners in the Scottish Government comes ahead of the expected abandonment of key climate targets.

Mair McAllan, SNP Cabinet Secretary for Economic Wellbeing, Net Zero and Energy is due to update Members of Parliament later today on the government’s response to a damning report which warned that leading corruption undertakings were “no longer believable.”

The minister is widely expected to announce that the request to reduce carbon emissions by 75% by 2030 is now unattainable.

It is also expected that Ms McAllan will remove the annual targets.

Speaking to the BBC, Mr Salmond drew attention to comments made by Humza Yousaf in December when the SNP leader said it was “absolutely inexcusable for the UK, for the Prime Minister in the face of a total climate disaster… to move in back on commitments to reach net. zero.”

He said it was a “tremendous embarrassment for the Prime Minister.

“But it’s a shame for the Scottish Greens. I mean, we already knew the Scottish Greens were lukewarm on independence, now it seems they’re lukewarm on green politics too.

“So it’s a great and complete shame. It will cause great tension.”

Mr Salmond continued: “Well looking at the Green ministers, it seems they are more connected to their jobs than they are to either independence or green politics.

“But the key to this is linking the achievement of Scotland’s greenhouse gas emissions targets, which is the cleanest country in the world, with the political power and supply that independence brings.

“That is the key to achievement. If we remain in the union, then the Greens and the SNP will have continued embarrassment.”

Mr Salmond’s Alba and the Greens have already clashed in recent weeks over a pro-independence rally in Glasgow.

Organizers told the former prime minister that his party cannot take part as the Scottish Greens “will not be sharing a stage” with them.

Faith in Scotland has presented their march on Saturday as a “festival of independence”, celebrating “everything about the country we want to build and sharing our positive vision for an independent Scotland.”

Speakers include Prime Minister Humza Yousaf and Green MSP Ross Greer, as well as Hue and Cry frontman Pat Kane and filmmaker Jane McAllister.

Mr Salmond told the BBC: “This is because of the disagreement on self-identification and women’s rights. We are in favor of women’s rights. We are against self-identification, the Greens had a different view, and therefore will not share a platform on independence.

“Now, it’s ridiculous of course. All independence parties should be cooperating and putting the differences on other issues aside.

“Of course, fortunately, there are plenty of other platforms, the All Under One Banner rally where Kenny MacAskill will be speaking next month and indeed the Hope Over Fear rally in September, which marks 10 years since the referendum, where i will be talk

“Therefore there are plenty of other cross-party platforms. But the Green Party is not only lukewarm on independence, as I say, today we discovered that they are lukewarm on green politics too.”

The Scottish Greens have been asked for comments.
