GUWAHATI: The central government has officially designated the fact-checking unit, which operates under the Press Information Bureau of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, as the fact-checking unit of the central government. This designation is made in respect of any central government business.

On March 20, 2024, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology issued a notice in this regard, TSH 1491(e), exercising its powers granted in sub-section (f) of section (b) of sub-regulation (1) of rule 3 of the information technology rules (guidelines Mediators and Digital Media Code of Ethics), 2021.

According to the announcement, the move is intended to ensure the distribution of accurate information to the public. The fact-checking unit is entrusted with the responsibility of verifying the veracity of the information distributed across various digital media platforms.
