Farmers’ protests are not only about the import of Ukrainian agricultural products. There are many other reasons, even Russian interference. Bernd Lange, head of the European Parliament’s international trade committee, said this during a briefing in Kyiv. This is reported by RBC-Ukraine, writes agronews.ua.

Answering the question about how to unblock the Ukrainian-Polish border, Lange noted that “this situation is illegal.”

“We have a clear European position on trade policy and relations with third countries, and actions (those blocking the border – ed.) were illegal, and the former Polish government also received a clear signal from the European Union , and now we have a situation, when there is a protest from the agricultural sector, from some farmers who try to block the border,” said the member of the European Parliament.

According to him, the European Parliament is trying to provide some opportunities to reduce competition, which they fear due to imports from Ukraine.

“For example, some licences, models, some direct support for farmers so that the situation can be calmed down. Personally, I have doubts that all the farmers’ protests are really about imports from Ukraine. There are many other reasons, there is even Russian interference in the farmers’ actions,” said Lange.

Also, according to him, the EU now continues to introduce tariffs on Russian agricultural products so that the situation on the agricultural market will also become calmer.

“And I hope that this will also lead to an improvement in the situation on the border. And this should be resolved in the near future,” added the head of the European Parliament’s International Trade Committee.
