Scarce rains and snowfall, along with rising temperatures, are drying up water resources in Himachal Pradesh, affecting 478 drinking water supply schemes in the state, including 32 in Darmpur area of Solan region, officials said on Wednesday.

“The reduction of water in the source was more than 75% and without an alternate source, water is supplied after three to four days,” said Chief Engineer of Jal Shakti Department, Anju Sharma.

“We are trying to meet the demand by raising water from Giri’s water supply and connecting the small plans and we have submitted a request to the administration for water supply through tankers,” she said, adding that the situation is under control and not critical so far, but could worsen if the temperatures continue to rise.

There are 10,067 functional schemes giving water to about 3,500 panchayats in the state.
