GUWAHATI: A local court in Mumbai has ordered the police to conduct an inquiry into social media influencer Sapna Gill’s allegation of molestation against cricketer Prithvi Shaw in 2023. Metropolitan Magistrate SC Tayde has ordered the police to submit a report on the inquiry by June 19, according to media reports.

However, the court rejected Gill’s plea seeking action against the police for not registering a First Information Report (FIR) against Shaw and others based on her complaint. Shaw has consistently denied the allegations leveled against him.

Gill accused Shaw of harassment in a pub in the suburb of Andriy. The incident allegedly occurred after an argument over clicking a selfie in a hotel, and led to Gill’s arrest in February 2023. She is now out on bail.

After her release, Gill filed a complaint against Shaw, his friend Ashish Yadav and others at the Andheri airport police station, alleging abuse and outraged modesty. When the police did not register a case against the cricketer, Gill approached the Magistrate’s Court.

In her complaint filed through advocate Ali Kaashif Khan Dash, Gill sought registration of an FIR under sections 354 (harassment), 509 (insulting the modesty of a woman) and 324 (causing hurt with a weapon or dangerous means) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against Shaw Videv for attacking her with a racket.

However, police argued in court that Gill’s charge of pub abuse is "False and absurd." They showed CCTV footage from the pub, in which Gil and her friend Shovit Thakur appear drunk and dancing.

According to the police, Thakur tried to record Shaw on his phone, but the cricketer stopped him. The footage did not indicate abuse by Shaw or others.

The police also stated that witness statements reinforce their findings, and no one witnessed Gil’s harassment. They also reviewed CCTV footage from a nearby air traffic control (ATC) tower, showing Gill following Shaw’s car with a baseball bat and then breaking the car’s window.
