GUWAHATI: All India Congress Committee president Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday, April 25, sought time from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to explain to him about the Congress manifesto, ‘Nyay Patra’.

Kharj’s request to meet Modi in person comes amid the latter’s election speeches, which allegedly misinterpreted parts of the manifesto to say that if elected to form the government, the Congress would take people’s property, including ‘mangalsutras’, to give to Muslims.

In his two-page letter, he said, “It has become your habit to take some words out of context and create a communal divide. You are demeaning the chair by speaking in this way.”

“You are being misinformed by your advisers about things that are not even written in our manifesto. I would be more than happy to meet you in person to explain our ‘Nay Patra’ so that as the Prime Minister of the country you do not make false statements,” Kharge wrote.

He said that Congress’s “Niyai Petra” aims to provide “Niyai (justice)” to youth, women, farmers, laborers and marginalized people of all castes and communities.

The Congress leader also said that he was neither shocked nor surprised by the language used by the Prime Minister in his recent speeches.
“It was expected that you and other leaders from your party would start talking in this way after seeing the dismal performance of the BJP in the first phase of the elections,” Kharj said.

He said the Congress has spoken about the deprived poor and their rights and added, “We are aware that you and your government have no concern for the poor and the dispossessed.” “Your ‘Suit-boot ki sarkar’ works for the corporations whose taxes you reduced while the wage earners pay higher taxes. The poor pay VAT even on food and salt and the rich corporations claim VAT refunds. That’s why when we talk about Equality between the rich and the poor, you are deliberately equating it to Hindus and Muslims,” Kharj argued.

“Our manifesto is for the people of India – whether they are Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Jains or Buddhists. I think you have not yet forgotten your pre-independence allies, the Muslim League and the colonial masters,” he charged.
