After Sam Pitroda’s statement, a separate debate broke out in the country regarding inheritance tax. BJP made it its election issue and targeted Congress from various platforms. Now Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has taken BJP to task on this issue. He said that the Congress had not said such a thing in its manifesto, but this issue is being deliberately raised by the ruling party because they are afraid of defeat.

“There is no such thing in the Congress manifesto”

Let us tell you that Taroor was a member of the team that prepared the Congress manifesto. He said that the inheritance tax was abolished in 1985 by the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. But after that BJP tried to raise this issue again. On Sam Pitroda’s statement on inheritance tax, Tharoor said that Pitroda does not live in India but in Chicago and these are his personal views. All the issues on which the Congress is contesting the elections were written in the manifesto. Tharoor said, ‘Being a member of the committee that made the manifesto, I can say that the party has never discussed inheritance tax.’

“The decision to cancel the inheritance tax was correct”

The Congress MP said that in 1985, the government was earning Rs 20 crore a year from inheritance tax. More than 20 million rupees were spent by the government to run this establishment. Therefore, the decision to cancel the inheritance tax at that time was correct. But, after that this issue has now been raised by BJP.

“BJP understands defeat from now on”

Tharoor claimed that in 2019, BJP leaders talked about inheritance tax and said it was a good idea. According to the Congress MP, the BJP is trying to raise again the same issue which was dropped by the Congress government. Referring to BJP, he said that the ruling party has already realized its defeat. Therefore, the party leaders are looking for issues that were not mentioned in the Congress manifesto.

According to Tharoor, he saw in his constituency that billionaires are adept at managing their wealth. They have very few assets in their names and also found that the cost of the wealth accumulated by billionaires was more than the revenue it brought to the government.
