OTTAWA –

The federal government will test its ability to issue emergency warnings today.

That means Canadians in most provinces and territories will receive a test alert on their mobile phones, as well as through television and radio broadcasts.

The only exception is Ontario, where the test will be held on May 15.

Provincial and territorial emergency management organizations already carry out regular tests of the system, but this is the first time the federal government has tested its ability to issue warnings.

It will conduct tests in eight states and territories, while state and territory authorities will conduct tests in four others.

The government says it has recently signed an agreement to issue alerts on information of national interest that is within federal jurisdiction.
