One of Manitoba’s top men’s curling teams made a new addition on Friday.

Team Reid Carruthers announced that Saskatchewan’s Catlin Schneider is joining the rink from Manitoba as their new third.

Schneider joins Carruthers, second Derek Samagalski, and lead Connor Njegovan. He replaces Brad Jacobs who recently jumped ship.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The 32-year-old Schneider has made four Brier appearances and just skipped Team British Columbia at the 2024 Brier where he finished with a 4-4 record, handing his only loss in Carruthers pool play.

“Their team decided to split up,” Carruthers said. “So it was like sitting there as a free agent. Many of the teams, players have already been counted. And as far as free agents go, he was definitely one of the best sitting waiting in the wings.

“It took us a while to decide which route we wanted to go and with Catlin, we’re getting a guy who really wants to play third. He’s excited. He is motivated. He’s in great shape, works really hard.”

Schneider will be curling out of a third different state in just three years. Carruthers returns to the skip position after going back to third last December.

Carruthers admitted there was some frustration with Jacobs bailing on the team midway through the Olympic cycle as they felt they were building some momentum.

Carruthers, 39, had to consider his own curling future before adding Friday.

“To be honest, when Brad first left the team, obviously we were all gutted,” Carruthers said. “But there is no hard feeling there. But myself, I’m nearing the end of my curling career and I had to take a few days myself to see if I wanted to continue on.

“There is no quit in this guy. There’s no giving up in my teammates either. There are two years left in the four Olympic years. My goal was to play this whole quad and then kinda assess my future then.”

Carruthers won his eighth career provincial men’s title earlier this year.
