NCP (Ajit’s faction) had on Saturday (March 30) announced that Sunetra would contest from Baramati. Earlier, Sharad’s faction had also declared Supriya as its candidate from the same seat.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Sharad faction MP Supriya Sule said on Sunday that the BJP wants to eliminate Sharad Pawar politically. It is a move by the BJP to field Sunetra Pawar’s sister-in-law against him from the Baramati Lok Sabha seat.

Supriya says – Sunetra is my elder brother’s (Ajit Pawar) wife and elder sister-in-law is considered as mother. The struggle within the Pawar family will not diminish my respect for Sunetra’s sister-in-law. She will always be like a mother to me.

On March 30, the Ajit faction of the NCP had declared that Deputy CM Ajit Pawar’s wife, Sunetra, was a candidate from Baramati. From this seat, Sharad’s NCP faction has given ticket to Sharad Pawar’s daughter Supriya Sule.

Supriya is a three-time MP from Baramati. He won the election for the first time in 2009. Then won from here in 2014 and 2019. Ajit is Sharad Pawar’s nephew. Through this relationship he is Supriya’s brother and Sunetra’s sister-in-law.

Baramati is sitting on Pawar family since 60s stronghold of
Baramati has been the stronghold of the Pawar family since the 1960s. Sharad Pawar won the assembly elections from Baramati for the first time in 1967. He won the assembly elections from here continuously in 1972, 1978, 1980, 1985 and 1990. Ajit Pawar is the MLA here from 1991 till now.

Sharad was the Baramati MP in 1991, 1996, 1998 and 2004. He handed over this seat to his daughter Supriya in 2009. The Baramati Lok Sabha constituency in Pune district comprises the assembly constituencies of Baramati, Indapur, Daund, Purandar, Bhor and Khadakwasla.

Who is Sunetra Pawar…

Sunetra Pawar, 60, is a social activist. Sunetra Pawar is the founder of the India Environmental Forum, an NGO founded in 2010. Sunetra serves as a trustee of Vidya Pratishthan. She has been a member of the World Entrepreneurship Forum think tank in France in 2011.

His brother is senior politician and former minister Padamsingh Patil. His nephew Rana Jagjitsingh Padamsingh Patil is the BJP Member of Parliament from Osmanabad. His elder son Parth had contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Maval, but was unsuccessful.

Ajit Pawar broke ties with Sharad’s uncle in 2023
Ajit Pawar joined the BJP-Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde) led Maharashtra government last year on July 2, 2023, along with eight NCP MLAs. On the same day, Ajit took oath as Deputy Chief Minister in the Shinde government. After this the NCP was split into two factions. One group was of Ajit Pawar and the other was Sharad Pawar.

Sharad Pawar’s NCP is with Congress’ Shiv Sena and Uddhav’s faction under the Mahavikas Aghadi Alliance. On the other hand, Ajit is with the BJP and Eknath Shinde is Shiv Sena under the Mahayuti alliance.
