The Supreme Court, while hearing the Karnataka government’s petition on Monday, said there should be no competition between the Center and the states. In fact, the Karnataka government has filed a petition in the Supreme Court demanding financial assistance from the National Disaster Response Fund for drought management. The bench of Justice BR Gavai and Justice Sandeep Mehta sought response from the Central Government on this Karnataka petition.

The Attorney General said – there was no need to file a petition

The Supreme Court said that various state governments are coming to the court these days. Justice Mehta said, ‘I don’t want to say, but why is this happening?’ Attorney General Tushar Mehta, appearing on behalf of the central government, asked the court for two weeks to respond. Mehta said that instead of filing a petition in the Supreme Court, the state government should have talked about the issue and the issue could have been resolved.

These arguments were given in the petition

The court will now discuss the matter after two weeks. The Karnataka government’s petition states that the central government is not releasing assistance from the National Disaster Response Fund to the state to deal with the drought situation. The petition states that this is a violation of the basic rights of the country’s residents, which are guaranteed to them according to Articles 14 and 21 of the Constitution. The state government says that because of the drought, people’s lives are affected and the 2023 season’s spicy crop is also affected. Out of 236 taluks of the state, 223 taluks have been declared drought-affected. The Karnataka government has demanded financial assistance of Rs 18,171 crore. Senior attorney Devdot Kamat and attorney K. Shashi Kiran Shetty, appearing for the state government, said that it is the central government’s responsibility to provide help according to the Disaster Management Law.
