Bhaskar News The roots of superstition are still strong in the rural areas of West Singhbhum Chaibasa district. Ho Samaj Yuva Mahasabha and government awareness programs are proving unsuccessful in the rural areas of the district. The death of a 6-year-old girl Lidun Kunkal from Pudda of Manjhari at her maternal grandfather’s house in Lisia under Tonto police station area is a result of superstition. At 6.30 pm on Sunday night, a poisonous snake bit the girl’s left leg near her house. The girl informed her grandfather and mother at the time about the snake bite. When some intellectuals from the neighborhood came to know about this, they wanted to take the girl to Sadar Hospital immediately for treatment, but the girl’s maternal grandfather, Kisho Hansda, was determined to get rid of the poison by offering prayers to his granddaughter. There was much dispute with the villagers regarding this. When the maternal grandfather insisted on taking the granddaughter to the hospital only after performing the puja, the villagers backed out. Due to delay in worship, the girl’s condition became very serious and she was rushed to Sadar Hospital at 9 pm. Where the emergency OPD doctors declared the girl dead after examination. The post-mortem of the body was conducted at Sadar Hospital on Monday and handed over to the family. The villagers found the poisonous snake and killed it with a stick.
