The water problem is becoming progressively more serious around the world. Groundwater levels have dropped an alarming 55 percent over the past 75 years. This will increase the crisis of pure drinking water and the population of the Global South will be the most affected.
This study by researchers from Utrecht University in the Netherlands was published in Nature Climate Change. He says the lack of clean water is a huge threat to both humans and ecosystems. It is wrong to ignore it. The study emphasizes that alongside a significant reduction in our water demand, we must equally focus on eliminating water pollution in order to overcome the global water crisis. Through the study, the researchers specifically focused on the growing clean water crisis around the world. The countries of the Global South mainly include Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia (except Israel, Japan, South Korea) and Oceania (except Australia-New Zealand).
The problems will increase in the future
Water scarcity is expected to increase further worldwide. Neither the change nor the impact will occur equally in all regions of the world. For example, in Western Europe and North America there is no water for only a few months of the year. In contrast, water shortages in developing countries are usually severe and last most of the year.
The water quality will deteriorate
Water quality will deteriorate in the future. This may generally be due to rapid population growth and economic development, climate change and deterioration of water quality. According to the study, although water quality is important for safe water use, it receives less attention. Previous assessments focused mainly on water quantity aspects. But safe use of water depends especially on its quality.
