Students with four-year bachelor’s degrees can now directly appear for NET and proceed to PhD, according to University Grants Commission (UGC) chairman Jagadesh Kumar.
To proceed to a PhD with or without a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), applicants will need a minimum of 75 per cent marks or equivalent marks in their four-year undergraduate course.
Until now, a candidate for the National Eligibility Test (NET) needed a master’s degree with a minimum of 55 percent marks.
“The four-year BA candidates can now directly proceed to PhD and appear in NET. Such candidates are allowed to appear in the subject in which they want to pursue PhD irrespective of the discipline in which they obtained their four-year BA degree,” Kumar told PTI.
